THE WINES

Our range of wines come from our family owned vineyards situated on north facing sun drenched terraces along the Waipara River. These wines are distinctive and a great match for food, and although are often described as more European in style than New Zealand, they are typical of our unique fossil rich soils and our untypical vineyard and micro-region.

2015 Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting Notes
The wine is a brilliant pale straw green colour. The aromas are as immediately striking as they are appealing – Passionfruit, gooseberry, elderflower and grapefruit introduce the nose while slightly riper exotic fruits fill in the background. There is also a whiff of gun-flint from a touch of barrel fermentation and creamy yoghurt like complexity from extended lees contact both serving to to knit the aromatics together. In the mouth the wine is refreshingly dry, tangy, medium to full bodied and excitingly intense. The flavours are seriously concentrated with those passionfruit, gooseberry and grapefruit characters complimented by pithy tropical fruit notes, think Pomelo or Jackfruit. Lovely saline minerality pulls the fruit through the mid-palate ensuring that the finish is long, dry and satisfying.

2016 Sauvignon Blanc

Tasting Notes
In the glass the wine is an appealing pale straw yellow with green hues. Aromatically it is one of the more striking Sauvignons we have made, with Hell block shining through showing its characteristic passionfruit, elderflower and lime aromatics. On the palate it is fresh, crisp and dry. Hell block leads the charge as the wine explodes in the mouth. The upper terrace fruit in all its fleshy glory gives mid palate weight and the small amount of barrel ferment knits the wine together with its struck match flint and slightly sweaty, salty goodness.

CHARDONNAY N BLOCK

Tank fermented and aged on lees for 10 months with no malolactic fermentation. Classic chardonnay characters of citrus, peach, white flower and crushed stone giving subtle fruit and mineral palate with long clean intense finish. Best described as Chablis with fruit.

2013 N Block Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
The wine is a pleasing pale straw/green showing that oxidation has been kept to a minimum. Aromatically this wine shows the subtle intensity of this vineyard site. Citrus oil, meringue, grapefruit, short bread and subtle bergamot characters are underpinned by lovely stoney mineral notes. The palate is similarly restrained showing white nectarine, more grapefruit and a lovely rock salt like salinity. The flavours build nicely in the mouth as the soft entry gives way to an evenly textured mid-palate that is crisp and refreshing rather like a lemon sorbet then finishes with lovely softness akin to almond shortbread. This is a wine made to enjoy in its youth but don’t be surprised to see it develop nicely in bottle for the next 5-8 years. It shows what can be achieved with when the depth of flavour from a great vineyard is allowed to show its underlying character by sensible winemaking and packaging consistent with the modern world.

2016 N Block Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
The colour is a limpid straw green. On the nose it shows classic cool climate Chardonnay characters of citrus, peach, white flowers and crushed stone with the barest hint of flint. As it opens up in the glass the wine grows into a more complex amalgam of yellow fruits, mineral salts and toffee. The palate is really where this wine shows its true origins with subtle fruit and mineral characters underpinned by life giving crunchy acidity. The entry is beguilingly soft and enticing that builds in intensity through the mid palate showing its chalky spine in a finish that lingers well after the wine is gone. We love this wine as an aperitif but it really shows at its best when paired with salty foods such as blue or goats cheeses, charcuterie and fresh seafood. This wine has been built to age so while it will drink well from release we would expect it to be giving satisfaction at 5-6 years or more.

Tasting Notes
The wine is a fullish straw yellow in colour. The aromatics show a lovely balance between citrus laced fruits and subtle toasty oak, think lemon oil and freshly toasted baguette. Classic flinty notes are lifted by yeast lees derived complexity. In the mouth the wine shows beguiling balance between lemony freshness, biscuity yeast characters and deeper stone fruit flavours. Structurally the wine has been built to last with a firm acid core giving the wine definition and length. It is a classically proportioned cool climate Chardonnay with emphasis on fine texture and restrained fruit allowing these grand old vines to fully express their own subtle power.

2014 Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
At bottling the 2014 Chardonnay has a brilliant green-gold colour with striking intensity. Aromatically it shows the subtle Chardonnay intensity. Biscuity, mealy notes intermingle with the aromas of fresh straw, very tight white and yellow fruits, a trace of toasty oak and gunflint. In the mouth the flavours build beautifully while remaining lithe and lively showing classic Waipara Chardonnay stone fruit characters balanced by nuanced fermentation derived complexity, very subtle oak and just a smudge of ripe skin phenolics in the finish.

2015 Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
In the glass it shows the bright green/gold that we have come to know of young Waipara Chardonnay. On the nose it is at once restrained yet offering complex mealy notes, tight citrus and stone fruits, subtle acacia like white flower aromatics and that lovely touch of gun-flint that links great Chardonnays of the world. In the mouth the wine is full bodied, generously flavoured with more of those stone fruits, apricot kernel and even some notes of dried fig as well as some beautifully seasoned French Allier oak. There is more than a nod towards northern Europe particularly the wines along the Yonne river where minerality and finesse are more richly rewarded than the big fruit bombs or intensely savoury wines of the southern Cotes.

2016 Chardonnay

Tasting Notes
In the glass the wine is a mid straw green. At first sniff it seems quite shy, hinting at citrus oil, some grapefruit pith maybe and nuances of hazelnut, grilled nectarine and the barest sliver of spicy lemony oak. Give it a swirl and the wine begins to open up revealing more intense stone fruits, think apricots, drizzled with sizzling butter, hints of roast cashew and that unmistakeable mineral salt aroma, like flint striking stone. Marry that with creamy lees characters like the smell of a well caramelised crème brûlée and your taste buds will be screaming for some action. The palate entry is silky yet well defined building in the mouth revealing layers of flavour and texture in the mid palate where the fruit slips seamlessly into a lovely salty mineral, dry, tasty finish. This is complex and layered with just a hint of lees derived complexity wound tightly into the wine. It is nuanced and detailed showing hints of a range of flavours from those bright citrus notes to deeper more serious stone fruit, pain grille & brioche like oak aromatics. It should repay cellaring for at least a decade.

2015 Riesling ‘Dry’

Tasting Notes
The wine is a brilliant pale straw green colour. Aromatically it speaks of the site, the variety and the vintage. At once delicate with white flowers, lemon blossom and lime zest then turning more serious with an undercurrent of stony minerality. On the palate the wine is refreshingly dry with more those lime zest/lemon peel characters that build in complexity in the mouth as deeper, riper fruit fills the mid palate all the time balanced by knife edged acidity. The lees influence adds a slightly doughy sensation that serves to knit the fruit to the acidity effectively masking the barest amount of residual sugar. And remember as great Riesling has the capacity to age, don’t be surprised if it looks great after a decade or so.

2016 Riesling ‘Dry’

Tasting Notes
The 2016 Dry Riesling is an attractive pale straw colour with subtle green hues. Aromatically is shows a good range of ripeness from perfumed floral notes, a little like apple blossom, a trace of lemon/lime and deeper baked apple and mandarin characters, all underpinned by dusty/chalky minerality. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied with soft white flower and citrus blossom on the entry that builds nicely into a citrus dominant mid palate. Well balanced fruity acidity offsets a sliver of natural fruit sweetness that gives the wine good line and length. It will reward medium term cellaring to allow the structural elements of the wine to relax into the fruit and give maximum drinking pleasure.

Tasting Notes
Aromatically this is a delightful expression of Riesling, albeit with its wild side tamed and definitely no sign of botrytis to obscure the purity of the fruit. White flowers, citrus zest and just a touch of talc like minerality on the nose. The palate is laden with yellow and green citrus notes, think limes, lemons, grapefruit, mandarin, gorgeous juicy acidity and a long refreshing finish that begs for another sip. The alcohol is thankfully low so you can enjoy an extra glass without worrying about the old Bill putting the dampeners on your evening. 2013 Riesling ‘Hell Block’

Tasting Notes
The aromatics are unashamedly floral in nature, rose, lavender, apple and citrus blossom. If we use colour descriptors rather than traditional flavour this wine would be essentially green/yellow with veins of pink and blue woven through. The former being citrus like fruit notes and the latter being ripe red apple and crunchy mineral. Either way it goes a long way to accurately expressing this vineyard in this growing season. A wine of which we are immensely proud and believe is capable of a long and happy life. Not necessarily of biblical proportions but profound nonetheless.

Tasting Notes
At bottling the colour is a satisfyingly deep ruby garnet with crimson hues at the rim. The nose shows ripe dark cherry, plum and mulberry characters sitting underneath lovely lifted raspberry and ripe rhubarb and earthy /spicy notes for the whole bunch ferment. New oak is well modulated with dark chocolate and liquorice complementing some interesting nutmeg and roast almond nicely. In the mouth plush sweet fruit is balanced by ripe dusty tannins that support rather than dominate giving the wine a multi layered texture. The mid palate is fleshed out by smoky, peppery oak that leads to a fine and long finish, extended by the spicy whole bunch Bizot component. A positive work in progress from last year and a wine in which we are immensely proud.

2014 Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes
In the mouth the wine feels tight and cool, the structural elements of acidity, alcohol and tannin holding the concentrated Pinot flavours at its core. The wine has amplified aromatics of the Bernard clones as well as the rustic charm of the old Saint Helena Pinot selection. The tannins particularly have a lovely sappy edge (possibly from the whole bunch ferment) that convey a feeling of tension. The bright, fruity acidity gives a sense of buoyancy balancing the sweetness of both the fruit flavour and the alcohol – of which this wine has sufficient but not too much.

Tasting Notes
At first glimpse the colour is a satisfying crimson/purple colour with flashes of magenta at the rim. The nose shows classic cool climate Cabernet Franc characters of violets, plums and spice – think mace, allspice, nutmeg and anise. Behind this are lovely notes of dark chocolate, rose petal and an intriguing top note of morello cherry. In the mouth the wine is balanced and harmonious showing lovely fruit tannin integration. Subtle yet fresh French oak gives the wine a delicious liquorice like tang in the finish while there is sufficient acidity to give the wine drive and energy which lends a savoury structure rather than it being totally fruit dominant. This is going to be a popular release so please try to do it justice by enjoying it with hearty modern bistro food, it positively screams for slow braised beef cheeks served with root vegetable mash. The earthiness of the mash will allow the delicious perfume and savoury structure of the wine to shine and the sinewy tannins in the wine will combine with the meat to provide a truly sensuous umami experience.

2016 Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes
Bright purple/mauve with crimson hues this wine almost smells what we think purple should be. Lifted red, blue and plummy black fruits combine to give the most outrageous mulberry, brambly fruit imaginable. There are some savoury notes too, more like maritime plants than terrestrial, think kelp rather than tomato leaf. Plus there are still distinctive yoghurt like notes from time in barrel. The oak is quite understated, taking on a supporting role which lends itself to its own inherent spiciness. If you can drag yourself away from smelling the “wine gum” laced aromatics, put the wine in your mouth and you will be immediately rewarded with a soft, succulent mouthful of those purple fruits, coating, velvety tannins, yielding yet supportive acidity and a texture akin to lying back into a thick fur rug. The mouth feel is quite luxurious giving a sense of softness and warmth and has what we like to call “flesh” on its bones.

Tasting Notes
At bottling it is a lovely deep purple/magenta colour. Each variety shows itself in the nose, dark chocolate/mocha and plum notes from the Merlot, smouldering tobacco, cedar and cassis from the Cabernet and violets, redcurrants and graphite from the Franc. The palate is equally serious showing sturdy, structural tannins than cloak the deep, dark pastille at its core made slightly savoury by bay leaf, black olive and anise. The wine shows a typical maritime edge to it but then again so does Bordeaux, Margaret River and Coonawarra so with time we expect this wine to relax and reveal true complexity from its smoky depths. Tasting Notes
The wine shows a lovely mid Ruby/Crimson colour with flashes of purple at the rim. The nose clearly shows the essence of each variety with cassis, cedar and tobacco leaf from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc offers up its characteristic violet like perfume, blueberry like fruit notes and peppery lift. The Merlot is all gorgeous, juicy plums and a lovely earthiness that keeps the wine grounded. All seasoned with some lovely toasty French oak. In the mouth the wine is immediately appealing with softly textured Cabernet Franc leading the way with its blue hues fruits, savoury sinew and delightfully peppery tannins. The mid palate is suitable fleshed out by those plummy pastille notes of the Merlot which also contributes some lovely low toned savoury notes like a well tuned sub-woofer. As the palate builds the Cabernet begins to assert itself showing typical blackcurrant, cigar-box and its unmistakable tannic grip. While quite chewy in its youth we expect the tannin to resolve over the next decade to reward those patient enough to cellar into the mid 2020’s.

Very botrytised 'fruit' handpicked in the snows of 2012. Pressed over 3 days to release small amount of intense sweet orange juice – fined & settled for several month, while we grew up a strain of yeast able to handle the severe osmotic pressure in this juice. Slow ferment over 18 months to achieve balance, then matured in 1 year old oak for another 18 months to settle & balance.

Straw gold. Complex nose with lifted waxy botrytis characters, think grapefruit marmalade, baked apple, candied pineapple, dried apricot, & lovely toasted brulee. Highly viscous slippery wine crammed with dried stone & exotic fruits, roasted hazelnut, quince & pineapple flavours. Palate has intense sweetness, yet acid to divert cloying, giving serious palate length.
